What is your R value?

Are you ready for the winter months? Believe it or not, your R Value may have the answer for you. R Value insulation ratings are used to measure the ability of your insulation to resist heat flow. The higher the R Value, the more effective your insulation is.

“Most of our residential clients in Atlanta have half of the R Value needed to effectively insulate their homes,” said David Lewgood, senior vice president, Turnkey Engineering, Construction and Roofing (Turnkey). “Many people think you only need good insulation if you live in very cold climates, which is not true,” he added. “Insulation keeps the heat in during the winter and the cool in during the summer and with the weather we have here in the Atlanta region, homeowners need to be sure their homes are properly insulated year round.”

Here are a few things that homeowners need to know about R Value when insulating their homes:

Insulation is extremely significant in protecting and regulating the climate of your home. One inch of insulation is equal to 30 inches of concrete.

One type of insulation maybe thicker or thinner, but if the R Value is the same, they should insulate equally.

The standard R value for house insulation varies based on climate and temperature. Your insulation specialist should know the appropriate R Value for your home based on its location.

Performance testing to determine R Value is done in a 70 F environment with no air movement. This is an interesting fact given that when most people need insulation the most – like in the winter months – we’re not usually experiencing these ideal temperatures.

The R value in home insulation is substantially lowered when there is air or water/moisture leaks, so homeowners need to be sure that their roofs are in tip-top shape.

“Overall, the key to making sure your home is protected is to deal with a certified professional,” Lewgood explained. “Your contractor should Residential_1.jpgeducate you as to what is best for you and your home.”
