Hail Storms Leave Atlanta Area Roofs Damaged: Learn How to Get Your Roof Repaired the Right Way

Atlanta area residents know all too well, the area has been hard hit in the past couple of years by hail storms. Among the many things destroyed by these storms are the roofs over our heads.

“The problem is that hail damage isn’t always obvious to the naked eye, especially from ground level,” said David Lewgood, vice president, Turnkey Engineering, Construction & Roofing. “Hail damage can be hidden and cause your roof to leak down the road with no recourse with your insurance company.”

Remember that your insurance company is not required to find hail damage just because hail may have been reported in your area. Each building is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. When you add to that the fact that most adjustors receive no formal training on inspecting hail damaged roofs and your chances for getting your damaged roof fixed become slim to none.

“Unfortunately, it is easy to miss hail damage, especially if you are not trained,” Lewgood explained. “Even if your roof has minimal damage, you have a valid insurance claim and should file with your insurance company,” Lewgood added. “The damage caused by a hail storm might not cause your roof to leak for years but by then it will be too late since the damage was not claimed immediately. This makes it critical to have someone who is qualified inspect your roof immediately after the storm.”

What to Do If You Think You Have Roof Damage

So what do you do if you think you may have hail damage to your roof and want to file an insurance claim? Here’s a simple checklist:

  • Check your home insurance policy and make sure you are covered.
  • If you are covered by your insurance policy, put in a call to your insurance agent who will get a claim started on your behalf. Be sure to ask for an insurance adjuster to visit your home and thoroughly inspect your roof.
  • Call a qualified roofing contractor like Turnkey to give you an estimate on repair and/or replacement. At Turnkey, we will actually meet with you and your adjustor to help your adjustor inspect your roof properly
  • The adjuster will take pictures of any damage and then explain what the next steps will be. Some adjusters may give you a settlement quote right on the spot while others may take up to a few weeks (note that if the insurance adjuster happens to think there wasn’t any significant damage, you will need to have your contractor debate it with them. This is where Turnkey’s expertise kicks in. It will be especially important to have your Turnkey representative present when the adjustor is inspecting. If it is not possible, have the adjustor come back at a later date that is good for all parties.

It is as simple as that! You should also keep in mind that many insurance policies have some kind of deductible that you will need to pay.
